What Do You See in This Photo of Honduran Children Found on the U.S. Border?

Sacrificial love and wild hope are as good an explanation as any

My first thought when I saw the two children in the grass along the Rio Grande River was — the Biblical Moses.

Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him. — from Exodus 2

The story of the two Honduran children was not found in the Bible but in a press release from U.S. Border Patrol. Agents at the Eagle Pass South Station were engaged in boat operations when they saw something that caught their eye on the riverbank. It was the bright clothing of a 2-year-old girl and 3-month-old boy, left alone on the river bank.

The release identified the children as siblings native to Honduras. The statement said that “a thorough search of the area was conducted and no additional individuals were encountered.”

Always looking for the interesting. Incurably curious. Write a new book in my head once a month. Hopefully one will cross the finish line before I'm 80.
