…o went out to pioneer, face hardship and challenges and went on to shape western urban development. Cronon stands this thesis on its head and says basically, the influence of the cities was always there in the first place. Where do you think those lonely cowboys were driving cattle to? They were driving them to rail heads to ship them to cities. Farms spreads across the west only after railroads gave farmers a market to ship goods to back east.
