Brian De Palma’s classic adaptation of Stephen King’s breakthrough novel features a knockout turn from Sissy Spacek as the eponymous bullied teenager. Her committed and convincing performance — from being pelted with tampons in the shower by cruel classmates, to the blood-soaked finale — fully deserved an Oscar nomination. It evokes profound sympathy to the point that one can scarcely disapprove of her telekinetic rampage when pushed too far by bullies and her religiously deranged, abusive mother. De Palma likewise deserved a nomination for his visually astonishing, iconic direction.
