5 Story Roundup

Found my profile? Here’s a sampler

I’ve been on this platform for about six months now. If Medium is a puzzle, I think I’ve only solved about 15 percent of it as far as what gets seen, and by whom. I have found some great content though, so it’s definitely worth what I’d spend on a cup of coffee each month to have access.

However, it’s not going to be a big moneymaker for me, no matter how many articles I read about “1K in 1 Month on Medium” or “Red Bull Your Way to Revenue.” And that’s OK. I would just drive myself crazy trying, and neglect the stuff that earns me more than $10 a month.

So, my new goal is to go for twice a week posts and to build in more time to read the people who do the same for me.

Because it’s not clear to me from the Medium homepage who pops up as far as featured followers, I don’t know how people find me and my recent pieces. But if you do, I wanted to share some past and present links if you’re interested.

Thanks for your time! Look forward to being a returning reader for you too.

The Simple Sadism of Olden Torture

This is my most recent story and was born of my family’s love of the NBC show, The Good Place. Torture — in the Bad Place — is played for laughs on the show, but in real life, it was and is deadly serious. This overview took a few days to write and research and even though it is short on claps, it is longer on reads, thanks to the further distribution channel. Curation is king for getting eyes on your stories. It happens for me maybe once out of every four to five pieces. I wish it was more. Don’t we all?

Welcome to the Ghost Tour

I knew when my family took a ghost tour in New Orleans a few summers back that I’d write about it someday. Especially looking at the photos I took after. The tour guide in the second photo was the inspiration for Elvira in the story. This is my first story in Lit Up. The editor assigned to my story took the time to suggest some edits and revisions which no doubt improved it.

Tête-à-tête

I love the Centina Pentina site. There’s a weekly writing prompt and you write either a 100 or 50-word story about it. It’s really jumpstarted my creativity and desire to write and I enjoy reading what other people come up with for the same prompt. This was my first one — a story that had to contain the sentence, “We need to talk.”

Your Holi-Do’s and Don’t Be a Dummy Instagram Guide

Humor writing is also something I have discovered that I like to read and try my hand at too. I’ve published a few times on The Haven which has a lot of good content. This piece was chosen for further distribution, which I thought was a regular thing. Now I realize that it’s not.

A View from the Top: Capulin Volcano

Because of COVID, we’ve been doing a lot of outdoor exploring in the past year. Capulin Volcano in New Mexico is one of the most spectacular places I’ve ever been. I’m also partial to the Weeds & Wildflowers page because Dennett, the site’s creator, is so darn supportive.

If you made it to the end, many thanks!
