5 Story Roundup — April 2021
Mysterious Medium, I am never going to figure you out, but I’m still trying. It is estimated that there are more than 50 million monthly visitors to Medium — and yet it is an ongoing effort to try to get a wider read for the pieces I write. I know I am not alone. Here is my April roundup:
1.) A Pop Quiz for Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month
A Pop Quiz for Autoimmune Disease Awareness Month
Your immune-compromised friends will thank you, really!
This is a piece on The Haven that was particularly meaningful for me as someone with an autoimmune disease. Thirty-one people read it with an 86 percent response rate which is something I rarely achieve. Then, it didn’t get curated and settled into oblivion. I believe in it so much I tried to reach out to Medium editors for another look. Crickets. Bummer.
2.) West Texas Road Trip
I think Medium loves The POM. It is a good site to love if you like poetry. Every time Medium gives me a follower update, they tell me people find me through The POM, despite the fact that I am not an editor on the site, nor had I ever submitted there. I was a happy reader though. When I finally did submit there, I got curated. Interesting. P.S. West Texas rocks.
3.) The Mystery of the Pictographs at the Fate Bell Shelter

A glimpse into life near the Rio Grande some 4,000 years ago
This is one story that I hope gets more eyes because it’s such a cool spot. Also Weeds & Wildflowers is awesome. I’m still wondering what I could have done differently in the writing to gain wider distribution.
4.) Rabbit Hole
Maybe Medium just loves poetry, despite some thinking that it gets the shaft. This poem got curated right away and it got reads, even at the crack of dawn when it got posted. I do dig Scrittura and had read there for a bit before submitting something.
5.) The Crazy Youth Sports Mom
I was a reader at MuddyUm for a couple of months before I got up the gumption to submit. It was a prompt from Amy Culberg that gave me the push I needed. So thank you! This is one that I am still hoping gets picked up for wider distribution. Spring sports season is in full spring and everyone knows ‘that parent.’ OK, maybe not this particular one, as she is over the top.
As always, thanks for reading. Weekends are really when I double down on some Medium reading so hopefully I will find some of your work on the site as well.
